Maya Del Sol is located in Oak Park.. 15 minutes west of Downtown Chicago. Although they’re technically not located in the City of Chicago.. They make some of my favorite tacos and it wouldn’t be right for me to write an article about Chicago’s best tacos and not include them! They have two varieties of fish tacos on their menu along with a third rotating “taco of the month” I highly recommend the blackened fish taco but you really can’t go wrong with any of the three options! The fish tacos are topped with mango pico de gallo, smoked cabbage, homemade morita aioli, and cilantro. The taco of the month I tried was a Pork Al Pastor and was topped with pineapple, onions, and cilantro. Weather permitting, Maya del Sol also has one of the best patios I’ve ever been to and I highly recommend you check it out!
Big star is located in the heart of Wicker Park in Chicago. They also have a stand inside of the United Center, where both the Blackhawks and Bulls play! They have around 10 different tacos on their menu, with both meat and vegetarian options. Some of my favorite tacos included the Taco de Pescado which is a fried fish taco topped with homemade chipotle mayo, cabbage red onion, lime, and cilantro, and the Taco Al Pastor which is a marinated pork shoulder taco topped with grilled pineapple, grilled onions, and cilantro. The Tostada de Hongos is also a great veggie option and is made with stewed mushrooms, fresh tomato and Serrano salsa, poblano pepper, goat cheese, and marinated summer greens. When the weather permits, Big Star also has a really great patio. Also during busy times, the wait can get pretty long so they also have a to-go window and extra seating right next door to the original location.
Broken English Taco Pub has 3 different locations around Chicago, The Loop, Old Town, and Lincoln Park. Broken English is serving 9 different varieties of tacos including a vegetarian option. I tried the Al Pastor de Pollo and the Fried Chicken! The Al Pastor de Pollo is spit-roasted chicken marinated in chile guajillo, charred pineapple and cilantro. The Al Pastor de Pollo was one of my favorite tacos out of everything I tried for this article… The mix of the marinade and charred pineapple was close to perfection! I really enjoyed the fried chicken taco as well because its something different that you wouldn’t typically see in a taco restaurant.. its made with a Baja style beer battered chicken, smoked cabbage slaw, and ghost pepper mayo! Fair warning… this one is quite spicy so if you are not a huge fan heat I’d recommend asking for the mayo on the side.
Dove’s Luncheonette is also located in the heart of Wicker Park, and is the perfect option if you’re in the mood for tacos, but also wanting to try something new. They only have one taco on their menu and they’re doing it right! The Brisket Taco Norteno is piled high with smoked brisket, jalapeño-avocado salsa, mayo, giardiniera, blue cheese, cilantro, and pickled pasilla Chile vinaigrette.
Antique Taco has three Chicago locations, Wicker Park, Bridgeport, and a spot in Revival Food Hall. Antique Taco has 7 different tacos, including two veggie options. I tried the Crispy Fish Taco and the Pork Carnitas Taco! I’m a sucker for a good fish taco and the Crispy Fish here was one of the best I’ve ever had… the combination of the tempura fried Alaskan cod, spicy tartar, smoked cabbage, scallions, and sesame seeds was close to pure perfection. If you like fish, you definitely need to try this one next time you go! The pork taco was also delicious and is made with BBQ pork, spinach, queso cheese, avocado, and bacon! Antique Taco in Wicker Park also has an amazing party room, called “The Guest Room” available to rent!
